Our Sustainability Commitments

Protecting The Natural World

We share your passion about protecting the world around us, from tackling deforestation to reducing carbon emissions and our use of water.

Sustainable Packaging

That is why all ACUVUE® contact lenses guarantee 100% sustainable paper and pulp packaging (box and leaflet) certified by either the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) or SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative)1.

We’re proud of our award-winning credentials: Product of the Year 2017 by Environmental Leader for sustainable packaging with ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day2.

Preserving CO2 and Clean Waterways

We’re also committed to reducing carbon emissions and protecting water resources by:

  • Saving 42,000 tons of CO2 per year through renewable and energy efficiency initiatives, equivalent to removing 9,074 cars from the road3.
  • Introducing 100% renewable electricity from wind power at our production site in Limerick, Ireland4.
  • Limiting water usage through sustainable changes in our manufacturing.
  • Actively encouraging all ACUVUE® contact lens wearers not to flush their lenses.

And it doesn’t stop there. By 2025 we’re committed to sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable energy sources and achieving carbon neutrality in all our operations by 20305.

Considering Climate

We’re always innovating to create products that are not just better for you, but better for the planet. This includes how we produce them, how they arrive at your door and even the packaging they come in.

We’re proud to have:

  • Reduced the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions required in the manufacturing process of ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day (90 pack) by 12%.
  • Lowered the carbon footprint of transporting contact lenses by 13% by switching from air to ocean freight. In 2021 this will be a 35% reduction.
  • Minimized the paper used in our ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day contact lens (90 Pack) packaging by 60% (for product manufactured in the USA), helping save 57 tons of paper annually!

Tackling Waste

Did you know that ACUVUE® contact lens boxes can be recycled? Your reusable container and solution bottle can also be put in your recycling bin.

TerraCycle® and ACUVUE® have partnered to create a free recycling programme for any brand of soft contact lenses and blister packs. The programme operates through a network of over 1000 public drop-off locations throughout the UK. So far, we’ve recycled over 6 million contact lenses, blister packs and foils together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ACUVUE® doing to tackle sustainability?

ACUVUE® is committed to leading the conversation and driving meaningful action on sustainability. We are determined to continue tackling key issues that affect us all, from recycling and reducing our carbon footprint, to optimising our packaging.

From reducing the energy consumption required and greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacturing process of ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day (90 pack) by 12%1, to cutting the carbon footprint of transporting contact lenses by 13% by switching from air to ocean freight2, and reducing the paper used in our ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day contact lens (90 Pack) packaging by 60% (for product manufactured in the USA)3. Moreover, in our manufacturing process, 90% of unused materials at ACUVUE® manufacturing sites are recycled4.

But it doesn’t stop there. We’re proud that our products have received global sustainability recognition as well, including ACUVUE® OASYS 1-Day which was named Product of the Year by Environmental Leader in 2017 for its sustainable packaging5. All of our contact lens packaging (box and leaflet) is also certified by either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)6.

We’ll continue to demand more from ourselves too, as we work towards our sustainable vision for the future and creating a healthier planet.

Why are contact lenses and the packaging they come in made of plastic?

Sterile plastic packaging means that your contact lenses remain well-hydrated, in shape, unblemished, and germ-free. After all, they’re relied upon to correct vision in two of your most precious assets: your eyes.

Contact lenses are a medical device that sit on the surface of your eyes. As well as needing to be transparent (so you can see) they also need to be stable, compatible with your eye and retain their shape during storage and use.

No naturally available material currently provides all of these proprieties. As a result, contact lenses are made from a combination of different components which together form a plastic that ensures the lens keeps its shape, provide accurate and comfortable fit and retains moisture for comfort during wear.

Can I recycle my ACUVUE® contact lenses?

You can recycle the outer boxes, instruction guides, reusable containers and solution bottles in your recycling bin. However, your local recycling facility will be unable to accept blister packs, foils and contact lenses due to their nature and small size.

But, thanks to ACUVUE®, and our partner Opticians, there is a solution!

The ACUVUE® Contact Lens Recycle Programme in partnership with global recycling specialist TerraCycle®, has collected over 6M pairs of contact lenses since launching in 2019.

Simply collect your contact lens waste at home and drop off at your nearest participating Optician’s practice – it’s that easy. Click here
